teaching leaders about the "joy of leadership"

The first session of 10 webinars during the International Week of Happiness at Work 2024, featured René Öhlensläger, a Danish expert in positive psychology and happiness studies. The conversation explored the concept of “hygge,” the Danish practice of finding comfort and happiness in the present moment, which René described as paying attention to the small moments in life. He also highlighted the importance of balance, suggested that while “hygge” is beneficial, too much indulgence, such as alcohol, can lead to negative outcomes.

René shared his personal and professional background, including his transition from a career in organic chemistry and the pharmaceutical industry to working with positive psychology. He focuses on translating scientific knowledge about happiness into practical tools for leaders and organizations. René discussed the “SPIRE” model, which emphasizes five elements: spirituality, physical well-being, intellectual well-being, relational well-being, and emotional well-being, all aimed at fostering happiness.

Throughout the session, René emphasized the importance of balance, quick interventions, and experimenting with small changes to enhance well-being. He also touched on the challenges of leadership and happiness in the workplace, stressing the need for human connection, curiosity, and the ability to embrace both successes and failures. The session ended with René sharing his enthusiasm for continuous learning and encouraging participants to engage in their own “me-search” (personal experimentation) to find what makes them happier at work.

In essence, René’s message is that happiness at work is achievable by focusing on small, meaningful actions and understanding that both positive and negative emotions are part of the human experience.
